A unique Vancouver treasure, overflowing with exquisite contemporary art
textiles and art-to-wear. Woven, embroidered, stitched, knitted, beaded
and quilted artwork of creativity, colour and texture. Our Gallery
features exhibits of work by member artists, friends of FibreEssence and
internationally acclaimed invited guest artists, such as Maggie Grey,
Jane Dunnewold and Ana Lisa Hedstrom.
FibreEssence is dedicated to works in fibre and fibre techniques. Many
of the artists work in, or incorporate materials not commonly thought of
in connection with fibre. For example, Fran Solar makes her quilted and
woven hangings from copper, while Hanna Haapasalo works with
combinations of clay and fibre for some of her pieces.
Background
Incorporated in 2004 as a non-profit society, FibreEssence is artist owned and operated. Our objectives are:
- To provide a venue for the support and promotion of fibre arts and artists.
- To provide opportunities and facilities for member artists and others to work, to exhibit, and to sell.
- To encourage creativity and excellence through peer support and education.
- To educate and inform the public about fibre art through
exhibitions; opportunities to see work in progress; hands-on experience;
artists' talks; and demonstrations of work.
- To build a resource centre, database, and web site focused on the fibre arts.
Currently, FibreEssence has 17 members working with embroidery,
quilting, sewing, weaving and surface design. All work is of original
design and innovative execution. and our jury system ensures that work
is of the highest quality. Our artists work in both traditional and
innovative techniques to create art to wear, hangings, accessories for
the person and for the home.
